DIY Tow Hook Color Change

DIY Tow Hook Color Change

Most four wheel drive trucks come equipped with tow hooks mounted under the front bumper.  They are usually black and unexciting.  Earlier this year, I showed a way to create a new look using tow hook covers made using a 3D printer.  Those looked cool when they came off the printer, but cracked as soon as I installed them.

I liked the look of the yellow tow hook covers, but was disappointed that they failed right away.  I considered buying a set of silicone tow hook covers, but they ran $60 for the pair.  Not a good option.

Brush-on Brake Caliper Paint

After rejecting the $60 rubber hook covers, I considered removing the hooks and spray painting them.  On my truck, that is a tedious process.  As I was looking at paint in my shop, I discovered a small can of brake caliper paint made by POR15.  Brake caliper paint is designed to be tough and able to withstand high temperatures.  It should easily handle the rigors of two front two hooks.

I used a portion of that paint on a relative’s Chrysler Crossfire brake calipers about five years ago.  I remember how easy it was to apply with a small brush, and the terrific finish from this special paint.  Luckily, that paint was still good! Not only that, it is available in black, silver, blue and red.

The images below show the progression from broken tow hook cover to finished product.  Other than having to wait 3-4 hours between coats, this was a quick and easy project.  The eight ounce can of paint now costs $27, but so far it has covered four brake calipers and two tow hooks.  I still have half of a can left!

Final Thoughts & Questions

I’m really happy with the results from this DIY project, and you can’t beat the price! Using a brush meant I was able to leave the tow hooks installed on my truck. This makes it a real winner in my book.
