Fun Cars Under $12,000: 1982 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

I found a 1982 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for this week’s highlight vehicle on Facebook Marketplace. As of this writing, the car is still for sale and the listing can be found HERE.  The asking price is $6,900.

The background for this series can be found at the end of this article.

Camaro Z28 History

It’s no secret that I like Z28s.  In fact, I made that fact clear in the article “40 Year Obsession: A Z28 Story” found HERE.

The Camaro was first launched in the 1967 model year, and the Z28 was offered as a race ready Camaro to Chevrolet Dealers.  The second generation of the Camaro was introduced as a 1970½ model, and the Z28 remained as the high performance edition.

When the third generation model came out in the 1982 model year, the emphasis was place on handling versus straight-line performance.  As a result, the Z28 was one of the best handling cars available.  In fact, it was Motor Trend magazine’s car of the year for 1982.

Why This Car?

I always keep an eye out for Z28s for sale and this low mileage version popped out at me.

Other than the paint peeling at the front edge of the hood, the rest of the car looks to be in really good shape.  It was originally a Hawaii car, so it never saw snow or road salt.  The 5.0 litre V-8 was replaced with a 5.7 litre V-8 with some nice performance goodies, and the 5 speed manual transmission rounds out the fun.

The seller claims over $26,000 have been spent to make this car special.  If true, this is a great buy at $6,900.

Background on this Weekly Series

I know there are affordable fun cars out there, so I want to highlight these gems.  On each Thursday I am going to share a fun/quirky vehicle found on either Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.  Most of them will be within 75 miles of my home in metro Detroit.  Others will come from one of my scounts (see “I Need Scouts” below).

In order to maintain the affordability factor, all cars will be under $12,000.

More details about this weekly feature can be found in the article Searching for Fun Cars Under $12,000.

Buying a Used Car

I covered the basics of how to buy a used car, including things to look out for and how to go about the actual purchase.

If you decide to go after this car, be sure to read the article Buying a Used Car HERE.

I Need Scouts

Let’s make this a participation sport!  If you live in any market other than metro Detroit and would like to be my “eyes and ears,” let me know.  It would be fun to see what some of you can find in places like Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and others.

If you want to be a Vehicle Nanny Scout, message me through the social links at the top of this page or by email at wct.billtaylor@gmail.com.

Send me a link to a fun car for sale, with a reason why you picked that car.  I will then include it in the weekly article published on Thursdays.
